Dear Parents and Families,

I want to extend to you and your child my warmest welcome into our classroom. My name is Ms.Washington and I will be your child’s science instructor for AP Biology or Forensics. I received my Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Psychology, with a minor in Health & Human Sciences at Loyola Marymount University. I also received my Master of Arts (MA) in Secondary Education with a Science Emphasis and Single Subject Teaching Credential in Biology at Loyola Marymount University. This will be my sixth year working at St. Pius X- St. Matthias Academy (PMA) where I am currently blessed to serve as the Dean of Curriculum & Instruction, the Science Department Chair, a Science Instructor, and Women's Soccer Head Coach.

I am honored to have your child in my science class, and I am excited to work with you and your child throughout the year. I believe that science is an extremely engaging and relevant discipline that increases our awareness and knowledge of the world around us and opens doors to new and exciting inquiries and discoveries.

My goal is to create a classroom learning environment that will enable your child to:
  • Develop a vocabulary of appropriate terminology to effectively communicate information related to the sciences;
  • Develop a deeper understanding of how science impacts their daily lives;
  • Demonstrate laboratory procedures used to examine scientific concepts;
  • Demonstrate information literacy skills to access, evaluate, and use resources to stay current in the field of science;
  • Approach and examine issues related to science from an evidence-based perspective;
  • Communicate clearly and in a way that reflects knowledge and understanding of the sciences and demonstrates the ability to adapt information to different mediums (posters, manuscripts, PowerPoints, iMovie, etc.).
As your child's parent or guardian, you are an integral part of your child's academic development. With this being said, parent to teacher communication is of vital importance. I hope to talk with each of you early this school year and throughout the school year. I would also like to extend an invitation for you to contact me via phone or by email at If you would like to talk in person, I am available to schedule conference appointments. Again, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.

I know that we will have a successful, exciting, and productive year in science and I look forward to being a part of the academic progress that your child will make throughout this school year.

Peace & Blessings,
Ms. Washington
